Months ago, I had blogged about our company teaming up with DK Designs - who specializes in clay floral artistry. DK Designs decorate our boxes, envelopes, pouches, bags with her clay flowers. This is one of her busiest season for weddings and so are we preparing for the new designs for the Christmas 2010. You would be surprised how most of our clients are now preparing for their gift sets using our Pandan Boxes and Pandan Open Containers.
I was so happy to learn that Diane had finished decorating some of our Pandan Wedding Favor Boxes.

Mondays are really hectic for us especially when we have big shipments from our manufacturing facility in the Philippines. When we get our shipment which usually happens once or twice a month, we deal with mix emotions---from US Customs delay due to their extra inspection, paperwork, unloading etc, etc.
But what we are most excited about is when everything comes perfectly---our products come neatly packed, no damages, and of course when we see those beautiful woven products made by our artisans. A lot of times we wonder how they could weave them so dainty and perfect that not even a machine can do it. On the other hand, we see how they work hard and sacrifice to make a decent living. We really thank you our valued clients for buying and doing business with us---You are part of helping us make the lives of our artisans better.
This new product that we are introducing is made of Sinamay (Manila Hemp) fiber in cobweb style weave.
It is a larger type of envelope with Size: 9 inches width x 6 1/4 inches height and 2 1/2 inches gusset. It has a wood button for closure. This is perfect for mini gift sets for hotel gift shops, bed and breakfast gift shops, etc.

When my husband Andrew Patrick (Andy) Boyle and I thought about a business that we will cherish and love, my mind immediately went back to my childhood days. The days back in the Philippines with all the beautiful handicrafts made by the poor artisans. This plant is a perennial and needs to grow in warm, damp areas in partial sunlight. The soil must be kept moist. This plant grows about twenty-six feet high and the fruit heads are approximately eight inches in diameter and looks like a green pineapple. The leaves are used for aromatic flavoring but mostly in connection with rice. These leaves are very popular in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and India. The leaves are also used as fragrant wrappers for rice, chicken and other food.

The medicinal uses of this tree are as follows: The entire plant is used as a diuretic, the roots have anti-diabetic properties and the leaves are used for treating skin diseases. Strips of the leaves are used in making woven baskets, decorative items, bags and many other products for home, spa, hotels etc.
Pandanus is a genus of monocots with about 600 known species. Plants vary in size from small shrubs less than 1 m tall, up to medium-sized trees 20 m tall, typically with a broad canopy and moderate growth rate. The trunk is stout, wide-branching, and ringed with many leaf scars. They commonly have many thick prop roots near the base, which provide support as the tree grows top-heavy with leaves, fruit, and branches. The leaves are strap-shaped, varying between species from 30 cm up to 2 m or more long, and from 1.5 cm up to 10 cm broad.

They are dioecious, with male and female flowers produced on different plants. The flowers of the male tree are 2-3 cm long and fragrant, surrounded by narrow, white bracts. The female tree produces flowers with round fruits that are also bract-surrounded. The fruits are globose, 10 to 20 cm in diameter, and have many prism-like sections, resembling the fruit of the pineapple. Typically, the fruit changes from green to bright orange or red as it matures. The fruit is also edible.

Going to our artisan's villages is more than 8 hours of travel via unpaved roads, high and zigzag dangerous in another side of the country via land and sea travel.

Despite all this, the place is a perfect scene for tranquility and joy. People live a simple life with the abundance of vegetables and catch from the ocean.

About late October or November of 2009, I got an email from Angelica, who used to work for one of our valued clients requesting if we will be able to donate some boxes for an event titled: Commitment to Integrity by the Cathedral Council of Interfaith Women -on Saturday January 16, 2010 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.

As years had passed, we have learned that time flies so fast and the best gift we can give to ourselves, our love ones, friends is enjoying each day at a time---

Gift giving is from the heart---simple gestures of a phone call saying you care for the person, home baked cookies or your favorite pie is fine. Giving is not based on the monetary value--it is the thought the counts the most!

Giving Back (Charity) during Recession Time

Children having nutritious meals through the Feeding Program of Fr. Ed Bellen (Pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in the Philippines)

Two years back, we had contributed canned food, pasta, candies, fruit drinks for these poor kids in the Philippines. The housing slump and the rising gasoline prices had slowed down most of the businesses in the US and other countries. But most of all, the gift industry is the most hit by this recession. So our question is : How can we still give back (charity) when our business is slow?

We have come to a few solutions. The money saved may not be that much but converting these savings from US Dollars to Philippine Peso (Philippine currency - Philippines - our chosen country for our charity projects) is a big help.

Brewing our own coffee instead of buying those latte and other expensive coffee to go.
Brown bag lunches- a big savings and healthier than fast food
Cutting down on office expenditures such as personal telephone calls, entertainment, supplies etc.
Recycle, recycle---those that can be sold for recycling can add up to a few dollars
Thrift shops have a lot of items that are new and cost much less than the regular price
Saving on electricity, water and gas
Telecommuting when possible or taking public transportation such as trains and buses

All these savings can add up and be used for our planned project for Christmas " My Christmas Wish" - Drawing contest that will express each of these poor kids their wish for the Christmas season.

Our company logo is a watercolor artwork (Lenila Batali of Designs by Lenila) of an ABACA PLANT

The abaca plant is a Philippine original. The origin of the abaca plant (a variety of the banana tree) is in the southern part of the Philippines (mainly found in the Bicol and Visayas region) where there are rain forests and highly humid atmospheric conditions. Its fiber is widely known in the export trade as Manila Hemp. Currently, Bicol and the Leyte-Samar area are the top producers of abaca fibers. While banana is valued for its fruits, the abaca is valued for its stalk The abaca plant also bear fruits and flowers that resemble closely the banana’s. The abaca is believed to have evolved in the Bicol area and since have been propagated fto Southern Luzon and the Visayas region.

One distinguishing characteristic between the banana and the abaca plant is the shape of the leaftip. The abaca is more pointed while the banana is rounded. Likewise the abaca fruits are small and are not as enticing as that of the banana.

The abaca is a plant material that the Philippine government regulates. While other plant material like seeds and flowers are freely shared between countries, among research centers, the abaca is restricted material.

It is used in the handicraft business as pulp material for handmade paper, fibers to be woven into ropes, and braids and cordage.
